ome musicians playing from the heart to produce some great foot tapping music that somehow soothes the soul, is perhaps the most popular description of 1974 A.D but it also stands as a band whose style cannot be overlooked.

Bleached hair, linen shirts, rings, bandanas, glares, leather pants, a flamboyant stage presence and a waist high Les Paul maybe the new metro sexual definition of the band whose every member stands as a rock figure and inevitably declares a fashion statement; to carry every dress code with flair and to live life with a great attitude.

Well it had to be confirmed as yet. So we decided on an interview with Nirakar, the charismatic Bassist of the greatest band in Nepal who in his own humble way obliged us.

Taking time out of his busy schedule and from an important practice session, he invited us to the serene environment of Moksha and granted us this interview.

Has style helped in the band gaining such popularity?

In a way, Yes. We have always portrayed ourselves as adventurous and free spirited which is in accordance to our music. We've always tried to look comfortable in what we play as well as what we wear. We couldn't possibly put on a suit and play in concerts (laughs). I guess the way we present ourselves has worked over the years.

Do you think that being fashionable helps in popularizing a singer or a band?

Definitely. You see, music in Nepal has become more glamorous. It was different with people like Nayaran Gopal or Arun Thapa who survived solely on their talent and class. But things have changed today where a singer may not be talented but a good video and a hip look has helped them become popular. There are a lot of youngsters who are good looking and stylish. They all put a positive impact and appeal to the audiences and they do well.

Being in a band that has cultivated a refined rock image do you relate yourselves also as fashion icons?

(Laughs) I don't know if anyone would want to dress up the way I do. I guess sometimes if you wear a bandana and play, it might look stylish and people might wanna wear one too.

Why aren't singers and bands taken as fashion idols in Nepal while in the west, most trendsetters are singers and bands?

Well, if you look at Nepal a decade ago, singers didn't have a star status. Times have changed certainly but there still needs to be a total change in the perspective of the society as a whole. Our society and listeners are different from those of the west, so are our fashion statements.

Having an image as perhaps the greatest band in Nepal , do you think that you bear a certain responsibility to the fashion industry in Nepal ?

Yes, sure, in some measure. We think that anyone should look clean and presentable and that is what we try to portray during concerts. We don't wear clothes that we wear casually while doing concerts. Sometimes before a concert, we do discuss upon what we should wear. The point is that we always try to keep a clean image and look presentable.

Have you ever (even subconsciously) tried to imitate anyone's fashion sense or dress code?
I can't say, but I'm mostly attracted to the 70's style. The use of cotton and linen materials appeal to me. I feel that a certain amount of care has to be taken.

What is your take on being Metro sexual?

It really depends upon your personality. Some people maybe very particular about the way they look. We rarely visit parlors though sometimes to color our hair and stuff like that.

What is your fashion statement?

I feel you should dress up the way you want to. Get a tattoo if you want to. Your clothes should show who you are, your own personality and your spirit.

Where do you buy your clothes?

I buy most of my clothes when we're on tour. Mostly in the outlets in America .

What accessories do you wear?

I wear rings during shows. But nothing really during my off days.

Are you “brand” conscious?

I'm not actually. But I like wearing branded stuff. When it comes down to jeans I'll choose a pair of Levi's any day of the week.

Do you wear Nepal made products?

Yes while doing concerts abroad we do wear a lot of traditional outfits with a mix match. My favorites are Nepal made cotton wear.

What clothes do you wear casually?

Mostly cotton pants and a simple shirt.

Any fashion tips to youngsters?

I would advise youngsters to dress up in a way that would reflect your attitude. I mean a person who has a good attitude could look fashionable even in sandals and shorts.

It won't long before 1974 A.D strikes the note of style and harmony once again. And we hope that they evoke in us a free spirit that all of us seek in a world where good attitude and style has become a luxury.
